Scholar Service Institute
Requirements for Participation in the Scholar Service Institute
The Scholar Service Institute is a demanding program available to
students with high averages who wish to expand their leadership
skills and to make a difference in the school and the world through
volunteer service and service related projects.
Ms. Eileen T. McMahon, teacher of English and Theology and
Chairwoman of the Institute, sees these students as leaven in the
school community, i.e., people who encourage others to join them in
Christian service.
Students are instructed in the Spring of their Freshman year after
they have achieved a cumulative average of 95 or above. Each needs
to be willing to fulfill the following obligations:
Maintaining a cumulative weighted average of 90 or above throughout
the Institute
Enrolling in 4 of 9 Advanced Placement Courses
Participating in a Saturday seminar day once per year. Guest
speakers are invited to address the scholars on these days.
Implementing a service related project each year under the
supervision of a mentor
Performing a total of at least 30 hours of volunteer service
Completing 3 seminars offered at local colleges in the students'
selected area of interest.
Approximately 85 students participate in the Institute.
